Bob Topping of Eye Care Strategies is introducing a week-long Optician Training Course in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bob Topping, the founder of Eye Care Strategies and Quick Edge lens edging service will be teaching an optician training course at Bogey Hills Vision Center in St. Charles, Missouri from Feb. 18th to the 22nd 2019.

St. Charles is immediately west of St. Louis and less than 15 minutes from Lambert St. Louis International Airport.

Bob has over 40 years of optical experience and while working with his clients became aware of the acute shortage of well-trained opticians.  Unfortunately, we often depend on chains and our vendors to train our opticians and their skills are often subpar.

Bob’s course is not meant to be a theoretical study to pass a test like the ABOC.  The course is limited to no more than 4 participants with the goal being to take someone with little or no skills and give them the foundation and practical experience to be useful right away when they return from the course.

The course is approximately 40% information and 60% application with real patients in the Bogey Hills Vision Center dispensary.  It explores the science behind optics and eyewear with the practical application of this information in everyday encounters in the dispensary.

Course participants can expect to learn:

  • Basic Eye Anatomy and Function
  • Refractive Errors
  • Glasses Rx and their parts
  • Basic lens geometry
  • Lens Types
  • Free-form lens designs
  • Photochromics, Polarization and Blue Block technology
  • Coatings and their uses
  • Contact lens basics – emphasis soft lenses.
  • Vision Plans basics (VSP and Eyemed)

They will also be taught and practice these skills:

  • Frame selection and fit
  • Reading frame markings
  • How to do basic adjustments
  • Basic repairs (screws, nosepads)
  • Taking measurements including vertex, tilt and wrap
  • Lensometry (Manual and Automated)
  • Taking aided and unaided visual acuities

Students will also make a field trip to a wholesale lab to see how traditional and digital lenses are made and coated.

If students bring a frame and single vision glasses prescription we will provide stock lenses (photochomic and polarized lenses excluded) so they can make their own eyeglasses. (They can also bring a frame and uncut multifocal lenses if they choose.) This will be a practical application of how all their work on the front end comes together to make the finished eyewear.
